Alternatives without medication

Medication isn't the only route to weight loss. For many people, a Combined Lifestyle Intervention (GLI), support from a dietitian and exercise programmes form the foundation, and in cases of severe obesity bariatric surgery may be an option. Which approach is appropriate is something a doctor assesses together with you.

Combined Lifestyle Intervention (GLI)

The GLI is a support programme for people who are overweight or obese, focused on nutrition, exercise and behaviour. The programme runs over several years and, subject to conditions, is reimbursed under the basic health insurance in the Netherlands, usually without the deductible (eigen risico). Whether you qualify depends partly on your BMI and any risk factors.

The GLI falls under the basic health insurance. Check the conditions on the reimbursement page and ask your GP.

Dietitian and exercise programmes

Alongside or outside the GLI, you can turn to a dietitian for personal nutritional advice, or to a physiotherapist or exercise programme to build up your fitness and muscle mass. This approach helps you build healthy habits that are sustainable in the long term.

  • Dietitian: personal dietary advice and guidance;
  • Exercise programme: building fitness and muscle strength;
  • Behavioural support: managing eating habits and motivation.

Bariatric surgery as a major option

In cases of severe obesity, weight-loss surgery (bariatric surgery) may be considered, usually only once other approaches have had insufficient effect. This is a major procedure with lasting consequences for eating and lifestyle, and it has its own criteria and risks. A specialist assesses whether it is appropriate.

Which route suits you?

There is no single approach that works best for everyone. Lifestyle is almost always the foundation, even when medication or surgery is used. Discuss with your GP or care provider which options suit your situation, health and goals.
