Mounjaro vs Wegovy
Difference in mechanism of action
Semaglutide (Wegovy) is a GLP-1 receptor agonist. Tirzepatide (Mounjaro) is a dual agonist that acts on both the GLP-1 and the GIP receptor. Both influence appetite and satiety, among other things, via receptors in the brain and the gastrointestinal tract. The added GIP effect of tirzepatide is the most important mechanistic difference.
Average weight loss
In a head-to-head study (SURMOUNT-5), the average weight loss was indicatively greater with tirzepatide (around 20%) than with semaglutide (around 14%). Results vary widely from person to person and depend on dosage, diet, physical activity and individual factors.
