Diabetes vs. weight loss
The biggest difference lies in the registration and the reimbursement: Ozempic and Mounjaro are registered in the Netherlands for the treatment of type 2 diabetes and are reimbursed for that under certain conditions. When used with weight loss as the main goal, reimbursement is usually not applicable. The doctor always assesses whether a medicine is suitable for your situation.
Registration: what is it intended for?
Ozempic (semaglutide) and Mounjaro (tirzepatide) are primarily registered for type 2 diabetes. For the treatment of overweight and obesity there are their own registered medicines, such as semaglutide in a different variant and tirzepatide for weight management. The doctor determines which variant and dosage is appropriate.
Difference in use
With type 2 diabetes, the goal is mainly to regulate blood sugar; weight loss is then an incidental effect. With the treatment of obesity, weight loss is central, often combined with lifestyle guidance. In both cases the medication is prescription-only and goes through a doctor and pharmacy.
Reimbursement differs greatly
Reimbursement strongly depends on the reason for use:
| Type 2 diabetes | Ozempic and Mounjaro are reimbursed under certain conditions from the basic insurance; the deductible (eigen risico) may apply. |
| Weight loss / obesity | Reimbursement is usually not applicable; you pay for much weight-loss medication yourself. Conditions change regularly. |
