Rybelsus vs Ozempic
Short answer: Rybelsus and Ozempic contain the same active substance — semaglutide — but in a different form. Rybelsus is a daily tablet, Ozempic a weekly injection. Both are registered in the EU for type 2 diabetes and available only on prescription through a doctor and pharmacy. The biggest practical difference lies in the form of administration and the strict intake requirements of the tablet.
Same substance, different form
Both medicines contain semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist. Rybelsus is the oral version (tablet, daily), Ozempic the injectable version (weekly). Because semaglutide in tablet form is harder for the body to absorb, strict intake requirements apply to Rybelsus (see below). How semaglutide works is explained at how GLP-1 works. We cover the broader pill-versus-injection consideration at pill or injection.

Rybelsus's intake requirements
For proper absorption, the patient information leaflet sets strict conditions for Rybelsus: take the tablet in the morning on an empty stomach, with no more than half a glass of water (about 120 ml), and then wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking or taking other oral medicines. If this isn't followed, the effectiveness may decrease. The Ozempic injection does not have these restrictions and can be given at any time of day. Always follow the patient information leaflet and the instructions of your doctor or pharmacy; more on this at dosage and titration.
Side effects and suitability
Because the active substance is the same, the possible side effects are similar — often gastrointestinal complaints, especially while building up the dose. Consult the patient information leaflet and the Farmacotherapeutisch Kompas for the full overview; see also Ozempic side effects. Whether a tablet or injection is appropriate depends on your preference, health situation and how consistently you can follow the intake requirements. A doctor assesses this during the intake; see also who it is suitable for.
Cost and reimbursement
Costs vary by form and pharmacy; a current estimate is available at cost. Reimbursement depends on your indication and policy and is subject to conditions, described at reimbursement. You can find more about each medicine at Rybelsus and Ozempic.
