Using Ozempic: pen, dosing & injecting
You use Ozempic as a weekly subcutaneous injection with a pre-filled pen. You set the prescribed dose with the dose counter, inject into the abdomen, thigh or upper arm, and rotate the site each time. The dose is built up step by step. Below is the practical guidance — always follow the patient leaflet and the instructions from your doctor and pharmacy. This is general information, not dosing advice.
The pen and the dose counter ('clicks')
The Ozempic pen has a dose counter that you set to the prescribed dose (for example 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg, 1 mg or 2 mg). So you do not need to count 'clicks' to dose — you turn until the correct dose appears in the window. Never count or estimate a dose yourself; use only the indicated settings and follow the patient leaflet for your specific pen.
Where and how do you inject?
You inject Ozempic just under the skin in the abdomen, thigh or upper arm. Choose a fixed day of the week and rotate the injection site each time to limit skin reactions. You can read the general injection technique at how injecting works. Your doctor or pharmacy will show you the first time.
Building up the dose
Ozempic starts low (often 0.25 mg/week) and is increased step by step every ~4 weeks, to limit side effects. The starting dose is an introductory dose to get used to the medication, not yet the maintenance dose. The doctor determines the schedule; never adjust it yourself. Read more at dosing & titration.
Storage
Store unused pens according to the patient leaflet in the refrigerator (2–8 °C), not in the freezer. Once in use, a pen may often be kept at room temperature for a limited period; the exact time is in the patient leaflet. Keep the pen out of the reach of children.
Missed a dose?
If you have forgotten your weekly injection, do not simply take a double dose. The patient leaflet describes what to do for each situation (depending on how many days ago it was); consult it or ask your pharmacy or doctor. When in doubt, always check.
