Buying & prescription

How do I get a weight-loss medication?

You can only obtain a weight-loss medication (such as Ozempic or Mounjaro) legally through a doctor and a pharmacy: a doctor assesses whether it is suitable, writes a prescription if they agree, and a registered pharmacy dispenses it. Without a prescription it is not legally available. Below you can read step by step how to obtain it, when you are eligible and what to do in the event of a shortage. This is general information, not medical advice.

The route in 4 steps

This is how the path to a weight-loss medication works in the Netherlands:

  1. Check whether it suits you. Weight-loss medications are intended for obesity (BMI 30+) or overweight (BMI 27+) with a weight-related condition — see who it is suitable for.
  2. Intake with a doctor. A GP or clinic assesses your health, contraindications and expectations — see the doctor's intake.
  3. Prescription and pharmacy. If they agree, the doctor writes a prescription; a registered pharmacy dispenses the medicine.
  4. Guidance and monitoring. The dose is built up step by step and monitored. Compare providers and their guidance on the clinics page.

When are you eligible?

Whether you are eligible is a medical consideration that the doctor makes based on your BMI, health and any conditions. Not everyone who wants to lose weight is eligible. Read more at who it is suitable for. For the specific products: Ozempic and Mounjaro.

Without a prescription is not possible

A weight-loss medication is prescription-only. Sellers who offer it 'without a prescription' or without a genuine intake are acting unsafely and possibly illegally, and counterfeits are in circulation. Read why on buying without a prescription and how to recognise fakes on recognising counterfeits.

The only safe route is through a doctor who assesses your suitability and a registered pharmacy. We do not sell medicines ourselves.

What if there is a shortage?

GLP-1 products have had periodic supply problems in recent years. In the event of a shortage, your doctor or pharmacy is the first point of contact: they can assess another strength, pack size or a responsible alternative. Never turn to illegal sources. Frequently asked questions

How do I get Ozempic?
Only via the legal route: a doctor assesses whether it is suitable, writes a prescription if they agree, and a registered pharmacy dispenses it. Ozempic is prescription-only and is not available without a prescription.
How do I get Mounjaro in the Netherlands?
Just like Ozempic: through a doctor who assesses your suitability, a prescription, and dispensing by a registered pharmacy. Compare providers on our clinics page.
Can I get a weight-loss medication online?
Online is possible, but only with a provider that does a genuine medical intake and dispenses through a registered pharmacy. An offer without a prescription or intake is a red flag and possibly illegal.
Do I need a referral from my GP?
Not always: some clinics do the intake and assessment themselves. In any case, a doctor must assess your suitability before a prescription is issued.
