Glossary: weight-loss medication
Clear definitions of the key terms around medical weight loss with GLP-1 medication — from semaglutide and titration to off-label use and BMI.
BIG-register
The Dutch register of qualified, authorised healthcare providers. Check here whether a doctor is BIG-registered.
Bijsluiter
The official product information that comes with a medicine.
BMI
Body Mass Index: weight divided by height squared; a measure of over- or underweight.
Contra-indicatie
A reason why a medicine is not safe or suitable for you.
GIP
A second gut hormone. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) acts on both GLP-1 and GIP, which leads to more weight loss in studies.
GLI
Combined Lifestyle Intervention: a reimbursed lifestyle programme covering nutrition, exercise and behaviour (Dutch GLI).
GLP-1
A gut hormone that curbs appetite and slows gastric emptying. GLP-1 medicines (such as Ozempic, Wegovy) mimic it.
Maaglediging
The rate at which food leaves the stomach; GLP-1 slows this, so you feel full longer.
Namaak / vervalsing
A fake medicine outside the legal chain; dangerous and illegal. Never buy without a prescription and a recognised pharmacy.
Obesitas
Severe overweight, usually a BMI of 30 or higher.
Off-label
Using a medicine outside its officially registered indication, e.g. Ozempic (diabetes) for weight loss.
Onderhoudsdosering
The dose you stay on after the build-up phase.
Plateau
A phase in which weight loss temporarily stalls.
Receptplichtig
Available only on a doctor's prescription; not freely for sale.
Semaglutide
The active substance in Ozempic, Wegovy and Rybelsus.
Subcutaan
Subcutaneous — under the skin, how GLP-1 pens are injected.
Tirzepatide
The active substance in Mounjaro; acts on both GLP-1 and GIP.
Titratie
Gradually building up the dose to limit side effects.
